HardBack. Condition: Very Good. No jacket. First Edition. 1st Illustrated Edition Thus, Bodley Head 1930. Thick Royal 4to. Profuse illustrations including illustrated coloured endpapers, tissueguarded steel engraved frontispiece and 9 further full page plate illustrations, full page framed chapter headpiece drawings, by seminal illustrator Frank C. Pape. Very good clean tight sound square, no bookplate, inscription or marks of any kind. Bound in bright gilt lettered and illustrated black cloth, featuring gilt maiden to spine, lion and dragon to upper. Cabells escapist fiction garnered critical and popular acclaim, and the obscenity trial for his delicately conveyed suggestive novel Jurgen guaranteed international success. The volume in hand is a gentle satire of the chivalric code of womanworship, graced with Papes illustrations. Pape and Cabell published three other titles together, and in his autobiography, Cabell praised the fitness of Papes style for these works. Papes first known work for Emile Clements Naughty Eric, published in 1902, remains extremely rare. One copy is held by The British Library. An original pen and ink illustration from one of the stories, The Magic Stone, has been found in Sussex.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Frank Pape (illustrator). 1st Edition. The first illustrated edition of this key work in Cabell's canon. Once you've slotted your brain into this man you need to read more. Allowing for a certain scruffiness through age and usage, all is well here; complete, including the ten full page drawings by Pape, and each still has its tissue guard. Handsome restrained black jacket has a bit of wear at the turns, and a few minute chips, but it is still substantial. In a mylar sleeve now. James Branch Cabell - for the correct pronunciation of his surname he composed this rhyme: "Tell the rabble my name is Cabell." - (April 14, 1879 May 5, 1958) was an American author of fantasy fiction and most famous as the author of Jurgen, published in 1919, which was the subject of an obscenity trial. His ironic & playful writing style has been an influence on later fantasy writers like James Blish, Fritz Leiber & Jack Vance. 0.0 0.0 0.0.
