Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. New York: Burdick Reed & Roberts, no date but circa 1853. 12 superb color floral plates with tissue guards, each with an opposed engraving, grace this prettily bound book - six with each of the two included volumes of The Ladies Wreath periodical. Octavo, red cloth boards with elaborate gilt imprinting on both cover and spine, All Edges Gilt, 218 + 218 - 4 pp., or 432 pp. (the second of two included volumes starts herein without the first four pages of the separate periodical). Two "Index" pages - in fact contents pages - for the two sections, the second of those pages being entitled "Index. Vol. IX.". Good plus to About Very Good - really, a strong Very Good but for the slit on the lower half of the left side of the spine, thus loosening the spine backstrip. Only light to moderate foxing at the plates, which certainly retain their beauty. Modest darkening to parts of the cover and spine gilt. Previous bookseller's light pencil notations on front endpapers. Very nice curb appeal. Please review scans. Helen Irving selected stories, poems, sheet music and non-fiction articles for The Ladies' Wreath - variety after the fashion of so many editors of variety magazines in the nineteenth century, when, I'm told, there were no movies or television shows and much entertainment came from sources such as this elegant and visually pleasing one. Substantially scarcer than most of its cousins. L-37n.
