Book
Trade paperback. Condition: As New. Blending exclusive interviews with Rachel Robinson, Mack Robinson (Jackie's brother), Hall of Famers Monte Irvin, Duke Snider, Pee Wee Reese, Roy Campanella, Ralph Kiner and others, celebrated author Harvey Frommer evokes the lives of Brooklyn Dodgers manager Branch Rickey and heralded baseball player Jackie Robinson to describe how they worked together to shatter baseball's color line. Rickey and Robinson is a dual biography tracing the convergence of the lives of two of baseball's most influential individuals in a special moment in sports and cultural history. To this day, their bravery and determination continues to shape the sociological perspectives of the sports world. Jack Roosevelt Robinson (January 31, 1919 â?? October 24, 1972) was an American professional baseball player who became the first African American to play in Major League Baseball (MLB) in the modern era. Robinson broke the baseball color line when he started at first base for the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947. When the Dodgers signed Robinson, it heralded the end of racial segregation in professional baseball that had relegated black players to the Negro leagues since the 1880s. Robinson was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962.

Book Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Limited Edition. This was book #416 of 432 hardback copies printed and signed by the author, JAMES RILEY. In addition, this copy is also inscribed to baseball historian and biographer, Bill Gilbert, 2/25/93, making this an unique copy. The book has 153 pages with three sections devoted to Ray Dandridge (maybe the best third baseman to play in the Negro Leagues; Leon Day (one of the best pitchers of the Negro Leagues); and the Devil-Willie Wells (possibly the Leagues best shortstop.) The section on Leon Day has 13 pages that have light yellow highlighting which does not affect the text. Otherwise the book is in very good condition. This is an essential book for anyone with an interest in the Negro Leagues. I have hundreds of signed baseball books and around 215 publications on the Negro Leagues and Black Sports and around 200 signed sport titles (mostly baseball) in stock. Discounts on postage are available on multiple purchased items. Signed by Author(s).

Condition: Near Fine. [undated, c. early 1970s]. Original 8" x 10" black and white photograph. Inscribed by Irvin: "To Lefty Gomez / Thanks for all the thrills / Monte Irvin / 1976." Portrait of Irvin dressed in a suit and tie, with a phone to his ear. Two tiny nicks to right edge of photo, else fine. Overall, a lovely example with a great association. This photo comes from the personal collection of Lefty Gomez. Monte Irvin played nine years in the Negro leagues with the Newark Eagles before getting the call up to the major leagues in 1949. He was one of the first African American players to break the MLB's color line (Jackie Robinson was the first, two years earlier, when he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers). Irvin played seven seasons with the New York Giants, winning a title with the team in 1954 after sweeping the Cleveland Indians. Lefty Gomez won five World Series titles with the Yankees in the 1930s. Gomez was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972, and Irvin was inducted just one year later. Signed.
Rare unbranded baseball signed in blue ballpoint on the sweet spot and side panels by 25 members of the 1955 New York Giants, including: Willie Mays, Monte Irvin, Hoyt Wilhelm, Al Dark, Sid Gordon, Al Corwin, Bill Taylor, Sal Maglie, Jim Hearn, Bobby Hofman, Marv Grissom, Davey Williams, Whitey Lockman, Wes Westrum, Joey Amalfitano, Windy McCall, Ray Katt, Paul Giel, Don Liddle, Hank Thompson, Dusty Rhodes, Billy Gardner, Johnny Antonelli, Ruben Gomez, and Don Mueller. The ball also bears a stamped Leo Durocher signature on the sweet spot. In fine condition. Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from JSA. During most of their 75 seasons in New York City, the Giants played home games at various incarnations of the Polo Grounds in Upper Manhattan. Numerous inductees of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum played for the New York Giants, including Christy Mathewson (a member of the Hall of Fame's inaugural class), John McGraw, Mel Ott, Bill Terry, Willie Mays, Monte Irvin, Frankie Frisch, Ross Youngs and Travis Jackson. During the club's tenure in New York, it won five of the franchise's eight World Series wins and 17 of its 23 National League pennants. Famous moments in the Giants' New York history include the 1922 World Series, in which the Giants swept the Yankees in four games, Bobby Thomson's 1951 home run known as the "Shot Heard 'Round the World", and the defensive feat by Willie Mays during the first game of the 1954 World Series known as "the Catch.".
