Sheet Music. Condition: Fine. THE DOVE and 'TIS JUNE. Composed by Landon Ronald. Enoch & Sons ltd., London 1905 9pp Sheet Music. Sir Landon Ronald (born Landon Ronald Russell) (7 June 1873 - 14 August 1938) was an English conductor, composer, pianist, singing teacher and administrator. He was the son of Henry Russell, noted composer of popular songs, and the half brother of the impresario Henry Russell, founder of the Boston Opera Company. Landon Ronald was born in London and educated at St Marylebone Grammar School. He studied at the Royal College of Music, 1884-1890. He then worked at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and became conductor of Augustus Harris's touring company. In 1894, he toured the United States as accompanist for Nellie Melba. From 1900 he worked for the recording company The Gramophone & Typewriter Ltd, predecessor of His Master's Voice (HMV), initially as pianist; he accompanied early recordings by distinguished singers such as Charles Santley and Adelina Patti. He is credited with making the very first recording of a solo piano piece: an arrangement of the Liebestod from Wagner's Tristan und Isolde, in 1900 on a seven-inch Berliner disc. This piece of music came from a substantial library amassed by Maud Beerbohm Tree and later added to by her daughters Viola (1884-1938 and Felicity (1894-1978) Helen Maud Holt (5 October 1863 7 August 1937), professionally known as Mrs Beerbohm Tree and later Lady Tree, was an English actress. She was the wife of the actor Herbert Beerbohm Tree and the mother of Viola Tree, Felicity Tree and Iris Tree. After early stage appearances beginning in 1883, Mrs Tree married and established a theatrical partnership with her husband, in which they appeared in revivals of classic plays and productions of new plays, first at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket and then at Her Majesty's Theatre. Her performances in serious roles were well received, but she was most celebrated for her work in comedy, from Shakespeare to new works by Wilde and others. After her husband's death in 1917, Lady Tree continued to act steadily for almost two decades more until towards the end of her life, in plays and some films, making her last stage appearance in 1935. This is just one of a great many pieces of music and scores that I am selling from this collection on this site. Ref SM2 Size: 9pp.

Octavo, blue boards (hardcover), gilt letters, xiii, 198 pp. Very Good+, with neat bookplate; in a Near-Fine, mylar protected dust jacket. From dust jacket: The world's worst mid-air collision occurred over the Zagreb beacon on September 10th 1976 and in the aftermath, eight air traffic controllers were arraigned on charges of criminal neglect. All but one were acquitted: that individual was sentenced to seven years rigorous imprisonment. This book deals with those events, with the effect of that judgement on the safety of international aviation and with the moral and practical challenges which society faces as a result. In these pages the reader is asked to make his or her own judgement: first as to the nature and extent of the alleged crimes and secondly, as to what ends have been usefully served by the insitution of criminal proceedings and the legal destruction of a single person. In making these evaluations the reader will follow the development of the disaster from three sources: the respective flight decks of the British Trident and the Yugoslav DC9 aircraft and the controllers' consoles of the Zagreb REgional Flight Control Centre. In each of these situations men performed their tasks and responded to external pressures in accordance with their own personalities; and some of these happenings coalesced at length to determine the fatal outcome. Yet this book is not only the story of that crash. It is a statement about an imperfect system devised by and for human beings; and for the case that its improvement should rest on the honest admission of deficiency rather than on the ritual sacrifice of whoever stands in the glare of a massive technological failure.
