Hardcover. Condition: Very good+ to fine condition. First edition Deluxe. Original portrait photograph of Joseph Beuys by Strelow from 1967, a gelatin print produced later; deluxe colophon leaf numbered 23/60. Small Folio. 316 (2)pp. Original photo-illustrated blue boards with blue and red lettering on cover and spine, in matching clamshell box with silver lettering on cover. The Beuys photograph (12 x 9 1/4"), depicting him with his son Wenzel gazing over his shoulder, was taken in his flat in Düsseldorf in 1967 and is considered one of Strelow's masterpieces. Liselotte Strelow was born in Redel, Pommerania, and arrived in Berlin in 1930. She took photography courses at the Lette-Verein school and in 1932 continued her studies at the studio of Susan Byk, a Jewish photographer. Soon after that Strelow was employed by the German Kodak and in 1938 she took over Suse Byk's studio on the Kurfürstendamm. Moving to Detmold in 1945 she went on to Düsseldorf in 1950, opening a studio at the Königsallee. Working with Gustaf Gründgens and Elisabeth Flickenschildt catapulted her into the limelight and when her portraits of the German President Theodor Heuss were chosen for a German stamp by the Post Office she could practically choose her clients. Among the dignitaries she photographed were German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, the Spiegel publisher Rudolf Augstein, Maria Callas, Joseph Beuys, Marlene Dietrich, among many others. Portrait photographs from her estate went to the Rheinische Landesmuseum in Bonn, theater photographs to the Theatermuseum Düsseldorf. In 1976 Strelow was awarded the "Kulturpreis of the German Society for Photography, among others. The monograph is illustrated with b/w reproductions of Strelow's portrait photographs, many of them full page. It was issued on the occasion of the retrospective of Strelow's work at the Rheinische LandesMuseum Bonn in 1981. Contains biographies of the prominent people photographed by Strelow, a list of photographs and copyrights and a bibliography at rear. Text in German. Clamshell box very lightly rubbed at bottom, else in fine condition.
