Both worked for the NZ Geological Survey and had combined on one previous geological book. The sub-title describes "Vanishing Volcanoes" as a guide to land forms and rock formations of Coromandel Peninsula. The preface observes that ". the Coromandel Peninsula is an excellent place to see examples of the volcanic events and processes that occurred millions of years ago." This activity was a "major factor" in the formation of much of NZ. After presenting a general overview to NZ's volcanic and geological histoy the book studies 26 Coromandel locations, including some islands, to present details of this past activity at each. As the preface points out, most of these sites are readily accessible by road and a short walk. First edition, published jointly in 1992 by Landscape Publications and the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences. 97 pages with explanatory text for eachg location, illustrated throughour with colour photos, maps and diagrams, two full page maps show site locations, with six laminated field guide sheets in pocket on rear pastedown. Colour pictorial laminated hard covers are VG++.internally NF., no inscriptions. A scarce and fascinating study, enhanced by photographs of the highest quality.
