First Edition
Full Calf. Condition: VG Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. First World's Classics Edition. Sextodecimo,[16mo] (15cm/6.inches),gilt-embossed Cumbrian-blue calf, pp. 279. Please feel free to inquire as to particulars and/or additional photographs. . Holme's first novel is a spirited melodrama set in Westmorland, in which the writer's love of the county and its cultural peculiarities is rather more convincing than her stiff-upper-lipped characters' love for each other (the book includes, among other local scenes, emotionally intense descriptions of a sheepdog trial and a wrestling contest). The title alludes to a village saying about the rooks returning to roost behind Crump Hall, in their 'haven of immemorial tranquillity'. Immemorial tranquillitythat is, a 'fantastical harbouring of terrible tradition and drear belief'characterizes the Lyndesay clan. The book begins with the death of Stanley 'Slinkin' Lyndesay, Master of Crump, when it is revealed that, despite his official engagement to Deborah Lyndesay, daughter of the Crump steward, he is already married to Nettie Stone, a horse-dealer's daughter. By the end of the novel, Deborah is engaged to the new Master of Crump, the noble Christian 'Lakin' Lyndesay; his embittered mother has been crushed to death by the great Crump cedar tree; Nettie has returned to her true love, Dixon of Dockerneuk; impetuous cousin Lionel 'Larrupin' Lyndesay has finally won the hand of would-be New Woman, Verity Cantacute, and immemorial tranquillity looks set to resume its sway. .
