Book
Paper. Condition: Good. Ronald Searle (illustrator). 3'rd Impression. This little POST-WAR digest is filled with one-liners, most of them that `dry, British wit' style. In N.Amer. I've heard them reffered to as `boners' - misprints by the press that lead to smiles, double entendres, etc. Previous editons (years/annuals) of This England were printed by `The New Statesman', this seems like the first take-up by Turnstile. There are 80 pages w/ a b/w SEARLE drawing on every third or fourth page. Cond: Light blue wrapper ( w/m' lord and m' lady and a lion) is both soiled and/or browned. Spine soiled w/ 2 sm. tears, staples are tight, thru'penny sized piece missing from corner of front wrapper, subseq. crease to next page. Three or four pages (p.53) have publisher's creases in them. Prev. owners name - ink. Ink note on back of front wrapper: "Capetown /26/10/51". I tried to find references in the text to the recently ended war but they were few. In the intro I did find this: " laugh - and in, an economy where pleasure is in short supply, what is there more pleasurable than laughter." Is this early SEARLE. Size: 8vo.
