Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Hiller, Lejaren a (illustrator). 1st Edition. Original publisher's blue paper-covered boards backed with beige cloth. Paper spine label with black text. 6 1/2" x 9 1/2." 294 pages, complete. Twenty-four black-and-white plates and additional in-text, black-and-white illustrations, complete. Each plate comes with an accompanying tissue guard with printed captions that describe the plate's subject. Five Appendices are included in the back. The following are the titles of the Appendices from "Appendix A" to "Appendix E": "How It Works," "Bibliography," "American Watch Manufacturers (Chronology)," "Well Known Watch Collections," and "Encyclopedic Dictionary" [has several small, in-text illustrations]. Pages and covers are very clean and intact. Binding is tight. Pages have slight age toning and a few small, occasional spots. Covers have bumped corners, slight darkening to the spine, and a few small marks to front and back. A Very Good copy. An interesting and engaging read about the history of timekeeping. The book begins with prehistoric timekeeping and moves forward chronologically through the centuries to modern times (circa 1919). Many timekeeping devices are discussed such as the prehistoric sundial, later sundials, water clocks (clepsydra), portable clocks (including the Nuremberg "eggs"), pendulum clocks, grandfather clocks, and modern watches. The plates are an expressive and charming accompaniment to the text. They feature the work of Lejaren a Hiller (1880-1969; nee John Arthur Hiller), a photographer best-known for his dramatic tableaux vivants, staged scenes in which actual human models posed in historical or theatrical settings. The plates in this book are a fine sampling of Hiller's style of photography with their historical subject matter, use of soft-focus lens, and presence of chiaroscuro (lighting effect that emphasizes light and shadow). The original photos from which the plates were taken may have been hand-painted, which was also representative of Hiller's unique approach to photography.

"The exhibition When things cast no shadow consisted of two parts one taking place by day, one by night. The daytime part of the 5th Berlin Biennale presented mainly new productions by 50 artists of four generations shown at four different venues?at the KW Institute for Contemporary Art, the Neue Nationalgalerie, the Skulpturenpark Berlin_Zentrum and the Schinkel Pavilion. Many of the participating artists conceptualized and built their commissioned artworks explicitly in response to the specifically designated exhibition site. Already a few weeks prior to the official opening the first in a series of five solo exhibitions (curated by artists participating in the biennial) was launched at the Schinkel Pavilion as part of the 5th Berlin Biennale. Throughout the duration of the biennial these exhibitions gave insights into ways in which younger artists deal with topics such as the legacy of previous generations, modernity or various exhibition formats." -- publisher's statement. Fine. Two volumes, both with covers and contents clean and unmarked.

Harry Wilde, auch Schulze-Wilde (* 16. Juli 1899 in Zwickau; 22. Sprache: deutsch.
