A large color plate mounted to the front. With sixteen color illustrations by Sterrett, all with titled tissue overlays. There is wear along the upper and lower cover edges with the boards showing at several areas. Boards showing at the corners. Wear to the spine ends. The original gilt to the spine is worn away. A few bumps to the upper page edges. The cover plate is rubbed and does have some wear along the upper edge. There is some foxing affecting many of the plates and tissue overlays. Some of this is quite light. A very tight copy with fine hinges. A name and date to the lower, front free endpaper. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 308 pages.

With an inscription on the front leaf to Elaine Baumann, the recipient of the "First Award" for a submission of a Fairy Tale called "Little Bird" from The Association of Professional Women Writers, Niagara Falls, NY 1938. The book is in good condition. Wear and soiling to the covers with worn edges and exposed corners. The lettering on the spine is illegible with frayed edges and cloth loss at half of the front joint. The mull is exposed at the bottom third of the front hinge. The interior is gently toned and largely clean with a few smudges. The color plates are clear and vibrant. The binding is sound. First edition thus, illustrated by Sterrett, with selections from the THOUSAND AND ONE NIGHTS magnificently interpreted by Sterrett in what was to be her final completed commission before her untimely death in 1931. 11'' x 8.75''. Black cloth titled in gilt with color pastedown, spine gilt flaked in a few places, gift inscription, else Near Fine; original box is present, but in pieces. Select tales from 1001 Arabian Nights illustrated with 16 tissue-guarded color plates and 20 b&w vignettes. Virginia Sterrett's story is somewhat tragic. She was only able to complete one year of training at the Art Institute of Chicago before dropping out to help care for her ailing mother. Then she was diagnosed wtih tuberculosis at the age of 19, when she also received her first commission from Penn Publishing; to illustrate Old French Fairy Tales. Her illustrations for Arabian Nights represent her final commission before her death at the age of 31. Her work is fanciful, detailed and often compared to that of Kay Nielsen. Rarely found in such beautiful condition and with the original box. Size: Large Thick 4to.
