First Edition
First edition. [4], 178pp, [6]. With an engraved plate depicting the Parian Chronicle. Contemporary half-calf, marbled boards, contrasting red morocco lettering-piece. Rubbed, substantial surface loss to spine, lettering-piece working loose, light damp-staining to boards. Upper hinge cracked, ink inscription to FEP reading 'Ex Libris Jacob Hebard', ink inscription of '(?) Parker Nov 3. 1858' to head of title, offsetting from plate. A reply by biblical scholar John Hewlett (1762-1844) to the assertions of Reverend Joseph Robertson (1726-1802) made in The Parian Chronicle (London, 1788), which sought to prove that the Greek antiquity under discussion, a marble stele in the collection of Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel, was in actuality a forgery. Hewlett, through discussion of similar fraudulent pieces, seeks to exculpate the artefact - the surviving fragments of which now reside in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. ESTC T107432. Size: 8vo in 4s.

Rubbing to joints, corners and extremities; small patch of abrasion to head of lower board volume III; occasional spot volumes I and III; light foxing volume II. A later reprint of this lavishly illustrated Bible, deduced by the fact some of the plates are dated 1813 and the maps are dated 1817. According to Herbert the 1812 edition was reprinted many times and by many printers. [Herbert 1563]. A handsome edition. The nine pages of mss family history are titled, "Pedigree of the Family Humble" under which is added in a different hand, "See the last page of this book". The pedigree begins with Edward Humble, son of John Humble. Edward was born on the 3rd of September 1723. He married Sarah Dawson and together they had twelve children. These children and their offspring fill the next eight pages with records of births, deaths, marriages and further offspring. There follow four blank leaves and the final page carries more information about John Humble (1699-1776) father of Edward (b.1723) and his father Michael Humble (1663-1758).

Full Leather. Condition: Good Plus to Very Good. No Jacket. 120 Engravings from Various Great Masters (illustrator). Original full brown leather with gilt decoration on boards. This was the Family Bible of Ann and Thomas Flint Field (Cheesemonger), of Fielden, Bedfordshire, parishioners of Christ Church, Newgate. The two-page handwritten account on front endpaper of Volume I gives birth, death, and baptism dates for all 10 children. The fourth son, WILLIAM (VENTRIS) FIELD, born August 21, 1813, had a long and distinguished career in law, and tried many important cases. In 1890 he became a member of Privy Council and was created a peer, BARON FIELD OF BAKEHAM. Other internet references refer to mother and daughter (of same name) as Ann. Mother Ann was killed in a buggy upset in 1833. Father Thomas died in 1861. All three volumes are sound and clean. Volumes II and III appear to be original, with marbled edges and minor surface wear. Volume III has a water stain on rear cover. Volume II has a cracked front hinge, and two small cover scuffs, but is holding together well. Last leaf of Volume III is nearly separated at the gutter. Volume I is a little brighter, and varies slightly in gilt border design, and with all edges gilt, showing that it has been rebound. J. Robins, Southwark, is the original binder, with his labels in the last two volumes. Each volume weighs 10 pounds, or 4.5 K. Marbled endpapers. Scores of pages of history, definitions, and other helps precede the Biblical text, which is in large letters in double columns for easy readng. NOTE: The handwritten account lists William as the fourth son, which conflicts with the Wikipedia internet listing, which was taken from Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1911, Volume 10 (Which we have sold separately). Very heavy books - will require extra shipping. Photo shows spines of all three volumes and cover of Volume II.
