Recent (last 30 years) half leather binding with morocco leather spines and quarters and marbled paper covered boards. Two volumes not originally paired volumes, in other words two volumes originally separate bound recently in a similar binding (page edges and size differs), nevertheless both first English editions. Scarce first edition only a few held in national and international libraries, no others for sale. Johann Gottlieb Tielke (17311787) was an army officer and an internationally recognized military writer. Although, because of his parents' poverty, Tielke had not received any academic training, he became a world-class expert on military fortifications, intelligence, artillery, tactics, and strategy. On these subjects he published several treatises, which were republished numerous times and translated into English and French. His writings were acknowledged in other German principalities and by Frederick the Great of Prussia. Tielke declined offers of military service several times from the Russian Tsar and from the Prussian King because he felt bound to Saxony. Vol I xviii, 348pp, 13 Plates and 3 Plans. Vol II viii, 273pp. 19 Plates. Provenance: none. Approximately 9 ¼ inches tall.
