Seller: CHARLES BOSSOM, Ely, CAMBS, United Kingdom
Soft Cover. Condition: Very Good. Large format paperback. Photographs. 241 pages clean and tight. The essays that form this book were written by four scholars, each outstanding for original and comprehensive research in his field. By uniting the essays in one volume, we hoped to present a current report on the understanding of nineteenth-century American architecture in those special areas that represent advances valid today: buildings for commerce, small homes, and city parks. It seemed pedantic, in our time, to separate parks from skyscrapers-landscape architecture from architecture proper-since they are complementary aspects of the city as man's habitat. Furthermore, in the centenary year of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, it seemed appropriate to consider what the United States had contributed to architecture at large during the fertile century in which the museum was launched. The essayists were aware, of course, that an exhibition structured in tandem with this book was being prepared for the museum, and that this exhibition would cover the years 1815 to 1915. Contributors were free to determine their own retrospective time spans. The results of this plan were surprising and heartening, for they revealed that this was a moment of general re-evaluation. Furthermore, none of these scholars was content to consider the past without close links to the present. The famous ivory towers, if ever they were more than mirages, are no longer considered habitable. Size: Lge 8vo.
