A concise and detailed work on New Zealand, looking into the history of New Zealand,a s well as it's natives, government, agriculture, animal life, geology, climate, mineral waters, wool, and more. Illustrated with two folding maps, one folding table, and five plates of tables. Compiled by James Hector, a geologist and surgeon, who had a lengthy scientific career in New Zealand. During that period, he dominated New Zealand's scientific institutions.

Second edition, substantially larger than the first edition of 1890 which had 56 pages. "This library contains books belonging to the New Zealand Institute, the Geological Survey Department, the Colonial Museum (acquired either as donations or deposits), the Patent Office, and the Wellington Philosophical Society." - from the preface by James Hector. Ordered first by subject, and then by alphabetical order of title. The main subject divisions are Physical Science; Natural Science; Applied Science; and General. Also included with this book are two incomplete poor defective copies of the first edition of 1890 (with substantial sections of text cut away from pp. 1-6 in each copy).; 8vo.
