Haughton, born in 1920 in Dublin, was graduated in 1941 from the Faculty of Natural Sciences of University of Dublin. He worked with the Royal Belfast Academic Institute during the war and, then, received appointment as lecturer at Trinity College Dublin s Geography Department. In 1964-1965, he was professor of Geography and Dean of the Arts Faculty in the University of Lagos, Nigeria. He was appointed to the Chair of Geography of Dublin University in 1966. He was also Council member of the Royal Irish Academy and the Chaiman of the Irish National Committee for Geography.
