Five of the books are traditionally connected with commemorative occasions in the Jewish year, while the sixth~the Book of Jonah ~is a significant and meaningful part of the ritual on the Day of Atonement (Yorn Kippur). From a literary point of view, two of these books, Ruth and Esther~in both of which, curiously enough, the heroines are women~rank among the best short stories ever told. Another, Ecclesiastes ( or Koheleth), is the work of a practical philosopher who viewed the world about him with tolerant despair. Yet this ancient existentialist encouraged his fellow denizens in this vale of futility to be sensible and accept their fate with calm and dignity. In contrast with Koheleth, the Song of Songs is a series of love poems, beautiful in their imagery, touching in their tenderness, uplifting in their charm. Finally, there is the Book of Lamentations. It commemorates the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem in a series of heartrending laments. Jews have always heard in it an echo of their centuries~long exile and persecution; yet woven into it are expressions of undying hope. Each of the books, as well as the volume as a whole, is prefaced by a brief scholarly introduction explaining its authorship, origin, and use in worship. The introductions are the work of Dr. H. L. Ginsberg, Professor of Bible at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America and editor~in~chief of the prophetic books in the continuing translation of the Bible sponsored by the Jewish Publication Society. In the work of translating, Dr. Ginsberg had Dr. H. M. Orlinsky, Professor of Bible at the Hebrew Union College~Jewish Institute of Religion, as fellow editor, and Drs. Max Arzt, Bernard J. Bamberger, Harry Freedman, and Solomon Grayzel as associates. These men did their work with the same loving care, the same regard for the Sacred Text, the same awareness of modern scholarship, and with that same desire to produce a translation for the modern reader of English literature which characterizes their translation of the Torah published a few years ago. The book is meant for private and public reading, at home and in the synagogue. It was designed by Ismar David, who further enhanced its appearance by his apt and decorative drawings.
