The four-page pen-portrait is taken from a series of "Biographical Sketches" (based on the running head), perhaps from a contemporary magazine. "This Print of the celebrated antiquary, Captain Grose, 'A fine fat fodgel wight, of stature short, but genius bright,' represents him in the act of copying an inscription from an ancient ruin, and was done during his visit to Edinburgh in 1789. He was exceedingly corpulent, and used to rally himself with the greatest good humour on the singular rotundity of his figure.".

258 x 228 mm (image dimensions); 371 x 275 mm (outer dimensions). Short tear to top edge, well outside image area. Very good condition. Evidently extracted from a work published well after the death of Francis Grose (1731-1791), whose The Olio included pithy "Essays, Dialogues, Letters, Biographical Sketches, Anecdotes, Pieces of Poetry, Parodies, Bon Mots, Epigrams, Epitaphs, &c." Although also a caricaturist, Grose was probably not the illustrator of this Aunt, as we have not traced the illustration to versions of The Olio from his lifetime. "Formerly there existed in the families of most unmarried men or Widowers of the rank of Gentlemen, residents in the country, a certain antiquated female either maiden or widow, comonly an aunt, or a cousin. Her dress I have now before me; it consisted of a stiff starched cap and hood, a little hoop, a rich silk damask gown, with large flowers. She leant on an ivory headed crutch cane, and was followed by a fat phthysicky dog of the pug kind, who commonly reposed on a cushion, and enjoyed the privilege of snarling at the servants and occasionally biting their heels with impunity, - by her side hung a large bunch of keys, securing various cordials and medicines. - the daily business of this good old lady was to scold the maids, collect eggs, feed the turkies, and assist at all lyings in that happened within the Parish - but alas this being is no more to be seen, and her race like that of the black rat is totally extinct!" - Grose's Olio. The descriptive caption concludes "London pubd, March 1st 1815 by Wm Holland Cockspur Street".
Third Edition. 250mm x 160mm (10" x 6"). xxiv, 176pp + plates. Twelve plates, including frontis. G : in Good condition. Light edgewear and scuffing. Text block clean and tight. Browning to plates Half-leather hardback with marbled boards.

The celebrated antiquary and illustrator Francis Grose (1731-1791) was one of Dudley Snelgrove's favourite artists. 270 x 380 mm. Original watercolour by the celebrated antiquary and illustrator Francis Grose (1731-1791), one of Dudley Snelgrove's favourite artists. The perspective of the scene is essentially the same as in Grose's "The Corn Mill at Wandsworth, Surrey" (The Collection of the Late Dudley Snelgrove, F.S.A., Lot 239 - Sotheby's London, 1992), though there are no figures on the bridge here, and the sails of the windmill have swung to the left. The mill was still present into the mid-1800s. The river shown is the Wandle. The picture has been withdrawn from a frame, and can be supplied with or without the surrounding card mount board.
