First edition hard back binding in publisher's original Wedgwood blue cloth covered boards, blocked and lettered gilt back and front, top edge gilt. Thick 8vo. 9'' x 6''. One of the most popular writers in Europe in her lifetime, being more renowned than both Victor Hugo and Honoré de Balzac in England in the 1830s and 1840s and is recognised as one of the most notable writers of the European Romantic era. Contains tissue-guarded frontispiece, (xix)-1, 375 pp with 5 further tissue-guarded full-page monochrome illustrations throughout. Old label partially removed from the top of the front paste down, foxing to the end papers and uncut closed text block edges and in Good condition, no dust wrapper. Scarce. Member of the P.B.F.A.
