Condition: Wie neu. Gr.8°. XIX, 303 Seiten. Originalpappband mit Umschlag. Umschlag berieben, sonst gutes Exemplar. - As a result of increasing public concern with the degree of homelessness and the treatment of homeless families in the Greater London Area, the Department of Health and Social Security set up a short-term research project in 1969 to review the position and to investigate the need for further research. Professor Grève, the principal researcher, had considered the problem of homelessness in London in the early 1960's, but despite legislation in 1964/5 giving greater security of tenure in privately rented accommodation, and despite a fall in overseas immigration into London, the problem appeared to have worsened and to require additional investigation. The research revealed much new information about the scale of the problem and about the characteristics of the homeless. The major underlying cause of homelessness was quite clearly found to be the shortage of cheap rented accommodation, a shortage which was most liable to render homeless the underprivileged - those on low incomes, coloured immigrants and the mentally and physically sick. Homeless families tended to come from extremely poor, overcrowded housing with few amenities, and many of them had been evicted by private landlords on previous occasions. The research revealed that most authorities, particularly those in Inner London, scarcely had the resources to 'contain' the situation. It also showed that the variation in policy and practice between boroughs was very great, particularly with regard to the proportion of homeless families subsequently accommodated in local authority housing and the speed with which this was done. Other differences in policy were found and led to recommendations by the research team for more co-ordination between boroughs, more central guidance on policy, and greater equalisation in the distribution of social service resources in relation to needs. During his more than 30-year tenure at the Walker, Friedman built a major collection of paintings and sculptures, created the world-famous Minneapolis Sculpture Garden adjacent to the museum, and originated numerous exhibitions of contemporary art. His friendship with Chuck Close goes back to 1969 when he acquired the now-iconic "Big Self-Portrait" from Close for the Walker's collection. In 1980 the museum organized the first Close retrospective, and in the mid-1990s Friedman began a series of discussions with the artist, out of which this book grew. ; blue cloth in photographic color dustjacket ; jacket sunned ; FINE/G.
