Condition: Very good plus. Limited first English-language edition of Green's Poe-like nested narrative of a student's psychological disintegration. Green, a Paris-born American citizen who wrote mostly in French and was the first non-French national elected to the Académie Française, first published PILGRIM in 1927 as LE VOYAGEUR SUR TERRE. It was his first novel-length work of fiction. Set in fin-de-siècle Fairfax, Virginia and presented as a set of fragmentary documents and manuscripts unearthed in the course of literary research, PILGRIM's alienated protagonist treasures books mirroring the one he is in: "Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley, Byron's Vampyre, some novels of Hawthorne." A lovely copy, with bookseller correspondence laid in addressed to German literary critic Hans Mayer, known for his work on outsiders in literature. 9.5'' x 7''. Original quarter vellum with blue cloth boards. Illustrated with 12 color wood engravings by René Ben Sussan. Typed letter in original envelope laid in. 121, [3] pages. One of 375 copies on Rives vellum. Light foxing to endpapers, scuffing and light soil to boards.
