CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: Day-to-day account of a British Barque sailing ship, Mertola, from Wales to South Africa, around the Cape of Hope to the Cape Verdes Islands. The voyage continued to Brazil and up the Amazon, engaged in smuggling and a mutiny. Arriving in the West Indies for repairs and onward to Florida for a load of timber and home across the North Atlantic only to be shipwrecked in a hurricane.
