Pictorial wrappers, very fine. Provenance: Jeanette Bonnier (1934-2016). New York, Dover, 1974. Large 8vo. xviii + 190 pp. With 217 black and white illustrations. With a map and an index of buildings. (Publisher:) "Today, hidden behind fire escapes, dingy paint and suffering continually at the hands of urban renewal, they may seem somewhat insignificant, but in their own time, with gleaming panes of glass and freshly painted facades, they were the pride of the city. Architecturally they represented one of the most important building innovations of the nineteenth century and were a giant step toward modern skyscraper construction. Now their era has passed, having been supplanted by bigger buildings and better modes of construction, and the number of cast-iron buildings still standing is relatively few. New York City, where this mode of construction originated, houses more cast-iron buildings than any other place in the world, and this book collects together some of its best examples. Well-known photographer Edmund V. Gillon, Jr., has wandered the streets of lower Manhattan and photographed them from numerous aspects and angles, in detail and from a distance. Margot Gayle, chairman of the Friends of Cast-Iron Architecture, has carefully researched every plate, identifying architect, foundry, date built, location, and delineating the history of the building. Together these plates and commentaries provide one of the most comprehensive statements on cast iron ever compiled. Cast-iron allowed for not only greater economy of building, but ambitious aesthetics as well, and Romanesque, Neo Grec, Queen Anne, French Second Empire styles are incorporated frequently into the building's arched doorways, columns, mansard roofs, delicate pilasters and window surrounds. Along with the many buildings photographed in this volume, Mr. Gillon has included views of ironwork from fences, lamp posts, bridges, and railings. The variety and detail of many of these is no less than amazing. This is a book to be enjoyed not only by the growing number of people who have come to appreciate cast-iron buildings, but by everyone who is interested in the city and its development. As modernization continually uproots more and more of the older city, it is enjoyable to reestablish sorne connections with the past".
