Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Hurd, Clement (illustrator). Fourth Printing. 94 Pages. Fourth Reprint of the April 1972 Camelot Edition ZN89 and was first released under a 1939 copyright. The ex-libris on the first page reads This Book Belongs To and is filled in with five female given names. Page eight has 7 lines underlined. Page 14 has two lines underlined and a question mark in the margin. There is an asterisk in the margin of pages 15 and 16. There are two words underlined on page 17. There is just a hint of age-tanning on many pages and the inside of the covers. No other defects noted and the remaining pages are flawless. The author played vital roles in writing and the other arts. As a creator in her own field, she was a pioneer in abstract, playful, and communicative use of language. She experimented in a wide range of literary forms including books for children such as this one. An ardent American from a distance, she lived in France during most of her adult life and chose to endure World War 2 there. This is a story about a girl. Rose was her name and would she have been Rose if her name had not been Rose and would she have been Rose if she had been a twin. She used to think and then used to think again. and a boy. I am Willie I am not like Rose I would be Willie what ever arose. I would be Willie if Henry were my name I would be Willie always Willie all the same.

A binder's copy of Stein's only children's book, which had been helped into print by Margaret Wise Brown (whose own writing was influenced by Stein). Brown (1910-1952) had been hired in 1938 as W. R. Scott's first editor and tasked with recruiting contemporary authors to write children's books (she would herself go on to be a prolific and celebrated children's author). Stein, who was already at work on The World is Round, accepted with certain demands. While the book was printed in blue ink on pink paper, the publisher insisted on an in-house illustrator, rather than Stein's choice of Francis Rose. Clement Hurd (1908-1988) and Brown would go on to work successfully together. The World is Round follows Rose, a girl seeking her place in the world. In a press statement for her book, Stein advised readers: "Don't bother about the commas which aren't there, read the words. Don't worry about the sense that is there, read the words. If you have any trouble, read faster and faster until you don't." A limited edition of 350 copies, signed by both Gertrude Stein and Clement Hurd, was issued in a slip case.
