3pp, 16mo. On bifolium of laid paper, with armorial watermark. Forty-two lines of text, signed 'Downshire' and addressed 'To / The Princess Charlotte of Wales'. The first five lines are scored through, as is another passage on the first page. The deleted commencement reads: 'Madam. / I hasten to return Yr. R. H. my humble thanks for the kind & gracious reply to my letter which [?] or receiving, in which Yr. R. H. confers upon Lady D. & myself in a manner so peculiarly [?] honour we have most anxiously desired.' The honour in question is 'consenting to be godmother to our little girl who shall be always brought up in every sentiment of respect & affection for her Royal Protector, whose name she will have the Honour of bearing.' The second half of the letter continues in much the same vein. The daughter, Lady Charlotte Augusta Hill (1815-1861), married Sir George Chetwynd.

See the entry in the Oxford DNB for his father the 1st Marquis. 2pp, 12mo. On the first leaf of a bifolium. In fair condition, lightly aged and discoloured, with thin strip of glue from previous mount on reverse of second leaf. The recipient is not named, and he signs 'Hastings'. The letter begins: 'Dear Sir, / I made the necessary enquiries as to the entry in the Leicester registry (through a friend of our clergyman) & enclose his reply [not present] - I fear it is not what you wished for.' He might get 'more satisfactory information' if the recipient can give a 'better clue to go by'. Turning to his painting collection he writes: 'The picture you were good enough to send me is already established amongst the portraits of his relatives, & I have at last got all my pictures up, & flatter myself they are now a very nice little collection, & amongst them many of great value & merit.' Unfortunately Dr Waagen ('Treasures of Art in Great Britain', 1854), in his peregrination around the country, was 'obliged to miss Donnington Hall, the seat of the Marquis of Hastings, with a collection of Dutch pictures and portraits', so we must do without his evaluation of the collection.

1p., 16mo. Letterhead printed in green on green paper. In fair condition, on aged and dusty paper, with traces of pervious mount along one margin. The note reads: 'The Duke of Northumberland will take a copy of the History of Newcastle, as requested by Mr Robinson in his letter of the 17th., to be sent to Alnwick Castle - | April 20. 85.' The reference is presumably to Richard Welford's 'History of Newcastle and Gateshead', published in London by Walter Scott between 1884 and 1887.

[D6] w. p. 31-32); A BEAUTIFUL, COMPLETE COPY. --- ''IN ENGLISH LITERATURE, 'Don Juan'(1819-1824), by Lord Byron, is a satirical, epic poem that portrays Don Juan not as a womaniser, but as a man easily seduced by women. As genre literature, Don Juan is an epic poem, written in ottava rima and presented in sixteen cantos. Lord Byron derived the character, but not the story, from the Spanish legend of Don Juan. Upon initial publication in 1819, cantos I and II were criticised as immoral, because the author Byron too freely ridiculed the social subjects, the persons, and the personages of his time. At his death in 1824, Lord Byron had written sixteen of seventeen cantos, whilst canto XVII went unfinished [and remained unpublished until 1903, without adding further plot to the end of Canto XVI.]. . . When Lord Byron died in 1824, the epic satire Don Juan was incomplete, and the concluding 'Canto XVII' featured little mention of the protagonist, Don Juan, and many mentions of the literary rivals, enemies, and critics who moralistically objected to Byron's perspectives of people, life, and society; the critical gist was: >If you are right, then everybody's wrong!<. In self-defence, Byron the poet lists people who were considered revolutionaries in their fields of endeavour - such as Martin Luther (1483-1546) and Galileo [Galilei] (1564-1642) - whose societies saw them as being outside the cultural mainstream of their times. 'Canto XVII' concludes at the brink of resuming the adventures of Don Juan, last found in a 'tender moonlit situation' with the Duchess of Fitz-Fulke, at the end of 'Canto XVI'.''(wikipedia).
