First American Edition. Signed presentation copy inscribed by George Stevens, Jr, (founder of the American Film Institute and author of the bookÕs introduction): Inscribed: ÒFor Carolyn and Michael, With every good wish, George Stevens Jr. Christmas 1985Ó. George Stevens Sr. was an Academy Award winning director. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with one small tear. In early 1944 acclaimed Hollywood film director, George Stevens Sr. (Shane, Giant, Alice Adams, Swing Time, Gunga Din, Woman of the Year, A Place In the Sun, The Diary of Anne Frank, etc), was asked by Allied Commander Dwight Eisenhower to organize a film unit which travel with the allied armies during the landings in France and follow their campaign in Europe. The unit extensively covered the war using the standard black & white film used universally throughout World War II. However, George Stevens, personally shot rolls of color film which remained unused and in storage until his son discovered 14 rusted cans of them in 1975 after his father passed on. The Imperial War Museum and the National Archives in Washington determined that the Stevens films were only color film footage of the war in Western Europe. This book with text by historian Max Hastings has over 200 color frame enlargements from the films as illustrations throughout telling the tale of the war and StevensÕs experiences.
