Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. From Cloddy Earth to Glittering Gold: A Canadian Gold Rush: The Biography of J. P. Norrie; by George Norrie & Harry Norrie; Foreword by the Hon. Margaret Norrie McCain; Trinity Enterprise Inc., Saint John, New Brunswick, first printing, January 2006. Signed by George Norrie, Margaret McCain, other Norrie s, the Mayor of Truro Bill Mills, and others presentation copy to David. From the blurb This biography of a gold rush pioneer who was a leader in the opening up of North-Western Quebec to hard-rock gold mining and settlement adds much of interest to what we already have documented about both the gold and how it was found and recovered, and about life among the rocks, the lakes, the muskeg and the endless bush before roads reached into remote communities. Much of the book has been written by Harry Norrie, who draws upon clear memories of his father and the north and writes with style and humour. Most of the rest is George Norrie s compilation of mining business in the 1930s and 1940s in the form of progress reports and letters left by J. P. Norrie. J. P. s saga begins back on the farm in Nova Scotia where he was born, where he would return periodically after he gained wealth and prominence. But it does not end with his death in a hotel room in Noranda at the age of fifty-four. His story lives on in the annals of the larger-than-life Canadians who pioneered the North. This book, 489 pages is in near-fine condition. The only fault is the removal of part of the map on the inside of the back board. This map is the same as that in the front of the book. Quite odd but does not distract from the otherwise pristine book. The dust jacket is in fine condition and is now in a protective mylar wrap. The book is illustrated with a few black & white photographs. A well made, beautiful association copy of a cornerstone book on mining in northern Quebec. An uncommon title. Signed by Author(s).
