Book
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Large Size Book, 2nd Printing. From April 1864 until the end of the war Horace Porter served as lieutenant colonel attached to Ulysses S. Grant's staff. He accompanied Grant into battle in the Wilderness, Cold Harbor & Petersburg campaigns and was there at the final surrender at McLean's house. During this time he kept extensive notes of Grant's conversation, as well as of his own observations of military life. Porter brings to the recollections not only a soldier's practiced eye, but also a writer's intelligence. His portrait of Grant is the most incisive and readable first-hand account that we have. We see Grant as soldier and hear in his own words the tactical evaluations that led to many of the war's most critical decisions. We find ourselves in the midst of battle and see the general's indifference to personal safety and his compassion for his men. At the same time there is a wealth of fascinating anecdotes, such as the general's own description of how he became a confirmed cigar smoker. 0 Language: eng Language: eng Language: eng.
