Softcover. Condition: Very Good. This is the personal narrative of the most famous cavalry leader America ever produced. Custer's solid claim to military fame rests upon his achievements in the Civil War, yet paradoxically he is chiefly remembered by reason of his death in the Battle of Little Big Horn in June 1876-- Custer's Last Stand. Much controversy still rages over Custer's career and character. Custer was an exceedingly complex man who, in life, won devoted friends and admirers as well as outspokenly bitter enemies. This book, representing the major part of Custer's life, was first published some two years before the General's Death. It is a vivid picture of the American West, the rigors of life for the settlers, and the horrors of indian warfare. Custer, in this intensely personal account, made a major contribution to american history.

Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. 1st Printing. 1st printing. Very light general wear. 1987 Trade Paperback. xii, 339 pp. "During separations enforced by the military, Lieutenant General George A. Custer and his wife, Elizabeth, corresponded about the Civil War, the perils of frontier life, and the chain of events that would lead to his tragic death at the Little Big Horn in Montana Territory. Their letters reveal the nuances of personal and political loyalties rarely expressed by historians and novelists. And they reveal a devotion rare among wartime marriages. He was her "Autie," her "Darling Boy," and she was his "Libbie," his "Darling Sunbeam." When Elizabeth Custer died in 1933, after fifty-seven years of widowhood, she left behind these treasured letters. Her friend and literary executor, Marguerite Merington, edited them, adding related materials and a thread of narrative reaching from Custer's birth on an Ohio farm to the final fury at the Little Big Horn.

Octavo, burgundy cloth (hardcover), gilt letters and decoration to upper cover, top edge gilt, xlix, 626 pp. Fine. From Publishers' Preface: For this year's volume of the Lakeside Classics the publishers are presenting their readers with the personal narrative of General George A. Custer. It is a story of the part played by the United States Cavalry, under the command of this brilliant and colorful leader, in the clashes between the settlers and the Plains Indians resulting in the final subjugation of the latter. The publishers believe no history of the West would be complete without it and that its readers will enjoy it more fully if they orient themselves by reading Dr. Quaife's Historical Introduction. The map facing the first chapter, drawn by Mrs. Robert K. Wyant from data supplied by him, will help serve this purpose. American Biography, Western Americana, American West, American History, United States History, U. S. History, Americana, U.S.-iana. yalic.
