'An outstanding study of Andersonville--both a vivid description of the conditions that resulted in high mortality among the prisoners as well as a balanced and unbiased evaluation of the officials responsible.' [Journal of Southern History] In February 1864, five hundred Union prisoners of war arrived at the Confederate stockade at Anderson Station, Georgia. Andersonville, as it was later known, would become legendary for its brutality and mistreatment, with the highest mortality rate--over 30 percent--of any Civil War prison. Fourteen months later, 32,000 men were imprisoned there. Most of the prisoners suffered greatly because of poor organization, meager supplies, the Federal government's refusal to exchange prisoners, and the cruelty of men supporting a government engaged in a losing battle for survival.

Hardcover. Reprint. Second printing, 1971. v, 146 p. 24 cm. Illustrations, Maps. Notes. Bibliographical Essay. Index. Five hundred prisoners arrived at Andersonville in February 1864, the first of 32, 000 men to be imprisoned there before the camp was closed by Federal forces in April 1865. Most of the prisoners suffered greatly--and 13, 000 of them died--because of poor organization, meager supplies, the Federal government's refusal to exchange prisoners, and often the cruelty of men and a government engaged in a losing battle for survival. Why was this squalor, mismanagement, and waste allowed at Andersonville? Looking for an answer, Ovid Futch cut through charges and counter-charges that have made the camp a subject of bitter controversy. Good in good dust jacket. Highlighting/underlining. Ex-library. Usual library markings. Pencils marks noted. DJ, in plastic sleeve. pasted to covers. DJ has wear, soiling, edge tears, and chips.
