Some shelfwear, bumps to the upper and lower edges of the covers, expected shelf soil for this color binding, top of front hinge and bottom of rear hinge internally neatly reglued and secure, sound text block, trace of old glue residue at the far inner margin before the engraved title page (possibly a tissue there at one point), very clean pages, no names or other markings. Angel image framed by detailed flower, title, small framed townscape, author's name on scroll, and other decorations; gilt spine lettering and publisher's colophon; all edges gilt. Solid endpapers. Illustrations throughout, engraved by Jas. W. Lauderbach. Moderate-to-heavy rubbing to cover extremities with corners of front board and spine tips frayed. Unfortunate corresponding dents to fore edges of front and rear board about 3" from top edge. Light random scuff marks and tiny stains to cover cloth. Except for intermittent tiny foxed spots to first several pages, including title page, interior is clean, tight, and unworn.

Front cover has bright gold embossed initials and the year '1881'. Moderate wear at all edges. Frontispiece is heavily foxed, otherwise pages are lightly toned, slightly more at edges, a few pages have light stains along spine edge - indicating that the book was used to press flowers. Pages are very thick stock, Each page contains a lovely illustration and a few lines of the poem, the opposite side (verso) of each page is blank. This book was published after Poe's death.
Illustrated by Darley, McCutcheon, Fredericks, Perkins, King, Riordan and Northam. (illustrator). First printing thus. Some rippling to hinge-side of ffep, circular shadow/abrasion from a sticker to corner of front past down, light soiling and darkening to cloth, overall near fine. Cover illustration and gilt very sharp and bright. Full yellow cloth, illustratively stamped in black, silver, gilt. AEG.
