No Binding. Condition: Collectible-Fine. Original black and white photo postcard. No date, circa 1930s. 5 1/2" x 3 1/2." Title printed at the bottom of the image. Postcard is unused. Postcard is very clean and intact except for a few small spots on the back. A Fine copy. This postcard shows a portrait of "Death Valley Scotty," also known as Walter E. Scott (1872-1954). Scott was a gold prospector and stunt man who is perhaps best-known for conning investors with the false promise of making money off of "successful" (non-existent) gold mines in Death Valley. Scott actually became friends with one of the backers he had duped, insurance magnate Albert Johnson. Albert and his wife, Bessilyn "Bessie" Johnson, came to enjoy Scott's company as well as Death Valley, so they built a winter vacation home there called "Death Valley Ranch." They built special quarters for Scott and invited him to stay there for the rest of his life. Scott resumed his antics and the Johnsons' palatial estate became known as "Scotty's Castle" after he claimed that it had been built from the money that came from his "mines." The imprint of "Frasher's Fotos, Pomona, Calif." is printed in the lower-right corner of the image. "Pub. by Frasher's, Inc., Pomona, Calif" is printed on the back. Burton Frasher (1888-1954) was an American photographer and publisher of postcards. Frasher toured around much of the American West and even into Mexico to take photographs and sell them as postcards. Frasher's postcards proved to be very popular during the 1930s and 1940s and were widely circulated.

No Binding. Condition: Collectible-Fine. Original black and white photo postcard. No date, circa 1920s-1930s. 5 1/2" x 3 1/2." Title printed at the bottom of the image. Postcard is unused. Postcard is very clean and intact except for a few small spots on the back. A Fine copy. This postcard shows "Death Valley Scotty," also known as Walter E. Scott (1872-1954), seated next to Bessilyn "Bessie" Johnson (1871-1943) and her husband, Albert Johnson (1872-1948), in Scotty's Castle. Scott was a gold prospector and stunt rider who is perhaps best-known for conning investors with the false promise of making money off of "successful" (non-existent) gold mines. Scott is also known for the famous "Scotty's Castle." The history of Scotty's Castle overlaps with the story of Albert Johnson, an insurance magnate who was actually one of the investors whom Scott had originally conned. Albert made repeated trips to Death Valley and eventually learned that Scott's "mines" were just a fraudulent scheme. However, he came to like Scott's company and became friends with him. Albert also came to enjoy the clime of Death Valley, which seemed to be beneficial to his health, so he and Bessie built a palatial winter home there called "Death Valley Ranch." The Johnsons also built special quarters for Scott at the ranch and invited him to stay there for the rest of his life. Scott resumed his antics and the Johnsons' ranch became known as "Scotty's Castle" after he claimed it was built from money that came from his "mines." The lighthouse is part of the Cabrillo National Monument and was built by the United States Government in 1855. At the time, the Point Loma Lighthouse had the highest elevation of any lighthouse in the U.S. The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1891 because its location meant that its light was sometimes not visible to ships. Today, the lighthouse functions as a museum.

Postcard is virtually pristine and intact. A Fine copy. This postcard shows the chapel of "Ramona's Marriage Place" in San Diego, California. Ramona's marriage place is actually Casa de Estudillo, a historic adobe residence. Jose Maria Estudillo and his son Jose Antonio Estudillo were early settlers of San Diego and built Casa de Estudillo in 1827. The Estudillo house became associated with Helen Hunt Jackson's historical novel, Ramona, when the San Diego Union published a front-page article in 1887 stating that Casa de Estudillo was supposedly the place where the character of Ramona got married. The appearance of Casa de Estudillo apparently fit the description of Ramona's marriage place in the book as well, so the association stayed. Postcard is virtually pristine and intact. A Fine copy. This postcard shows a landmark and the graves of James "Jimmy" Dayton (1832-1898) and his friend, Frank "Shorty" Harris (1856-1934) in Death Valley, California. The plaque is shown both in its original position on the landmark and enlarged and centered for better readability. Dayton was a longtime manager of the Furnace Creek Ranch, a prospector who worked with Harris, and a "swamper" for twenty-mule teams. Twenty-mule teams were actually teams of eighteen mules and two horses that carried borax from mines to trains in Death Valley from 1883-1889. Swampers were assistants who completed tasks such as unharnessing the donkeys and horses, gathering supplies, and cooking for the rest of the group. Harris was a prospector who found many gold claims in Death Valley. While he never developed any of the claims into mines, he earned a living by selling his claims. Dayton and Harris became friends with their mutual interest in prospecting. Harris requested that he buried next to Dayton when he passed. It connected Miami, Arizona with Superior. In 1956, the Queen Creek Tunnel replaced the Claypool Tunnel.
