This postcard shows a brewery in Virginia City from the "bonanza days." This Virginia City may either be the one in Nevada, or the one in Montana. Nevada's Virginia City was founded as a boomtown upon the discovery of the Comstock Lode in 1859. For years, Virginia City was a happening place and a central hub for the local mining industry. The population of the town varied depending on the outputs of the mines. By about 1880, the mining outputs decreased significantly, and a substantial decrease in population followed. Much of Virginia City's economy became based on tourism in the twentieth century. Montana's Virginia City also began as a boomtown upon the discovery of gold in 1863. This prompted a local gold rush and the town became the new capital of Montana Territory in 1865. However, the prosperity of Virginia City was relatively short-lived. In 1875, the territorial capital was moved to Helena where more gold had been found. Virginia City became somewhat a ghost town, but during the 1940s, efforts were made to preserve the town for historical purposes and to draw tourists. Today, the population numbers 216 with a slight upswing during the summer. Burton Frasher (1888-1954) was an American photographer and publisher of postcards.
