First edition. First edition. 8vo. Original green cloth with titles and decorations stamped in gold gilt on the front cover and spine, 396 pp., author's preface, Introduction by Franklin W. Hall. Introduction by the late Colonel William H. C. Bowen, frontispiece (California Joe in the Black Hills, 1875), illustrated, portraits, appendix, index. The story of Moses E. Milner, famous from the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean as "California Joe." He ranked with such men as Kit Carson, Wild Bill Hickok, Buffalo Bill Cody, Captain Jack Crawford, the North Bothers, Billy Comstock, Jack Corbin, and Charley Reynolds, but to the present generation he is scarcely more than a name. "California Joe" was one of the greatest scouts in all the West and was a mountain man, Mexican War veteran, Forty-niner, Oregon pioneer, gold-seeker in California, Idaho, and Montana, Indian fighter, and army scout. The authentic account by Colonel William H. C. Bowen of "Custer's Last Fight" provides his first-hand account of the battle. Six Guns 1507 says "Scarce." "Rich in information about Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickok." A fine, bright copying dust jacket. Scarce dust jacket has 1.5" repaired closed-tear to bottom edge of front cover, and has been internally reinforced with tape along all edges and folds.
