He was brother-in-law to Richard Henry Dana, Sr., who gathered much of the material for this life but was unable to put it all together. A reading copy, only, as a rodent has nibbled the cloth on the front fore-edge and there are stains on the covers. These are the only faults.

Hardcover. 435pp. Quarto [25 cm] Brown cloth covered boards with a gilt stamped title on the spine, and a gilt stamped bust on the front cover. Top edge gilt. Other edges deckled. Good. Ex-library, with a couple of obscured library marks. The spine and covers are mildly darkened, rubbed and stained. The spine is heavily darkened. A library number at the foot of the spine has been rubbed out. The cloth at the spine ends is chipped, particularly at the foot of the spine. There are 3/4 inch long splits in the cloth at the ends of the spine, along the joints. The underlying boards are exposed at the corners. The spine ends and edges of the covers are bumped. Weak hinges. The front endsheet has a large stain and abraded patch, as well as a short red mark. There is a bookseller's very small label on the rear endsheet. The text block is cracked a couple of times. The pages are tanned. With reproductions from Allston's Pictures.
