Card Cover. 88 Pages Book Condition: Near Fine, Hint of shelf wear, Illustrated with many colour, b&w photographs and maps throughout this copy, No inscriptions TE WAIAROHIA O NGAITAI The Story of the Bucklands Beach Peninsula Geoff Fairfield and his family have had a long association with Bucklands Beach. In 1861 his great grandfather, Alfred Buckland bought the East Head estate, the 350 acre farm incorporating what we now know as Bucklands and Eastern Beaches. It was subdivided in 1916. This book is the lifetime record of the oldest resident of Bucklands Beach. In his careful study, detailed observation and scientific research, he has recorded the geological and archaeological history of the Bucklands Beach Peninsula, as well as the European settlement and development. These different strands have been woven into a fascinating story. Bucklands Beach was once a major industrial site for the manufacture of stone adzes, from boulders brought by the Maoris in their canoes from Motutapu Island, long before Europeans arrived here. Not long ago he recognised the remains of a palisade post he found, as a significant part of an early Maori settlement at Bucklands Beach.
