Unbound. Condition: Very Good. A SINGLE LEAF from the following title: Opus Concionum Tripartitum - by Matthiae Fabri, S. Theol. Licentiati, Parochi Neoforensis, Et Palatinatus Superioris per Dioecesin Aichstadianam Visitatoris, Dein Societatis Jesu Presbyteri, Pluribus & exquisitis in singula Evangelia Dominicarum & Festorum Celebriorum totius anni argumentis instructum. Omnibus Verbi Dei Ecclesiastis, & fidei Divinae contra Haereticos Zelatoribus utilissimum. PARS AESTIVALIS. Editio nona, aliis anterioribus longe correctior, additisque hinc inde in Concionibus Sacrae Scripturae locis auctior; Cui Accessit Quintuplex Index; Primus quidem Concionum, initio cujuslibet Partis; Secundus & tertius, Controversiarum fidei, & Caeremoniarum Ecclesiae, una cum Repertorio in materias totius Operis primo Tomo praefixus; Quartus vero Materiarum & Rerum memorabilum Ad Calcem cujusvis Tomi, Quintus denique locorum, S. Scripture, in toto Opere explanatorum, ad finem tertiae Partis de Sanctis appositus. Printed in Cologne (Coloniae Agrippinae) by Sumptibus Viduae Simonis, unter fetten Hännen in 1739 (Anno MDCCXXXIX). Cum Privilegio Sacre Caesareae Majestatis. This being PAGE 115/116. Contains 65 lines of Latin text printed in double column. With printed margin notes. Single page, printed on both sides, recto & verso. Laid paper. Large FOLIO size leaf. In GOOD condition overall, with faint staining, mild foxing, marginal worming & large tear with loss to text. The author of this title, Matthiae Fabri (Matthias Faber), (1586-1653) was a German religious writer & preacher. Faber was born in Altomünster (Bavaria). He became curé of the parish of St. Maurice at Ingolstadt, & was a professor at the University of that city. His sermons had already won for him a reputation as a sacred orator when he entered the Society of Jesus at Vienna in 1637 at the age of 51. Whilst there he published three volumes of sermons for every Sunday in the year. He then published another volume of sermons for all the Sundays & the principal festivals of the year. This book, divided into two parts, is called the Auctuarium, & was thenceforward published along with the former volumes. The Opus Concionum Tripartitum (which this leaf was removed from), together with the Auctuarium, contain one thousand & ninety-six sermons. Besides these, he preached funeral & marriage orations, published after his death. He died in Tyrnau, Slovakia. The sermons which he has left are remarkable for the clairty of their Catholic doctrine, & learning. He is even more a controversialist than orator in the ordinary sense of the word. His object in preaching was, before everything, either to convert non Catholics, or to safeguard Catholics from the Reformation. According to the custom of the times he made excessive use of Scriptural text, which crowd his instructive sermons & render the reading of them difficult. They are all written in Latin, & have been published in many editions. This magnificent large folio-size example of early letterpress printing is from a substantial collection of material which was only recently unearthed in Budapest. These pages sat dormant for almost 300 years, concealed in a Hungarian cellar. They survived multiple wars & decades of communist rule, in which countless books were destroyed. This original letterpress printed page comes with printed sheet with full details. A digital image of the title page of the original antiquarian book which this particular page came from will also be provided with purchase. A truly wonderful folio-size example of early letterpress printing. Ideal for framing. RARE & desirable.
