A Good copy. A beautiful photograph showing many sheep on a grass field in Southern California. The firm credited with taking this photo was F. H. Maude & Company. F. H. Maude & Company was founded by Frederic Hamer Maude (1858-1959), an English-American photographer. Maude was born in England and had initially entered into the field of medicine. He earned his medical degree in 1883 but soon changed his career plans to become a photographer. In 1887, Maude immigrated from England to California by traveling through Canada. He first chose Ventura as his new place of residence, but by 1895, he had settled in Los Angeles. By that same year, Maude had also purchased the photography firm of C. B. Waite at West First Street, presumably the same address as stamped on the back of this photo. Much of Waite's collection of photos showed life in Southern California. Maude's own business, F. H. Maude & Co., was built off of Waite's company. It was common practice at the time for photographers to use their own imprint on other photographers' photos upon acquisition, so it is possible that another photographer actually took this photo. It was also documented that Maude sold photos by Waite and other local photographers. While Maude became well-known for his acquisitions of other photographers' work, he was a talented photographer in his own right. Maude own portfolio featured scenes of the American Southwest, and he also served twice as the president of the LA Camera Club. It is thought that he retired from the photography business around 1924 since this was the last time his name appeared in a local registry with an associated profession.
