This postcard shows a group of people on a balcony overlooking the fish pool and courtyard at the Oakes Garden Theatre in Niagara Falls, Canada. Oakes Garden Theatre is an amphitheater that opened in 1937 at the north end of Queen Victoria Park. The land upon which the amphitheater is built was donated by Sir Harry Oakes, 1st Baronet (1874-1943), a mine owner, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, to the Niagara Parks Commission in 1936. The landscape architecture of Oakes Garden Theatre was designed by Howard and Lorrie Dunington-Grubb. The building architecture was designed by William Lyon Somerville. Florence Wyle, Frances Loring, and Elizabeth Wyn Wood made the sculptures. Frank Howard Leslie (1876-1969) was a Canadian printer and distributor of postcards, educator, and entrepreneur. He began his career as a teacher and principal. He later purchased local newspaper companies including the Tavistock Gazette, the Niagara Falls Review, the Niagara Falls Record, and the Evening Review. Many of his postcards show views of Niagara Falls and surrounding areas.
