Hard Back. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 460 Pages. There were 13 volumes of the Confederate Military History published in the early 1900s. This book is a reprrint with no publication date given. Inked two-line price on front endpaper. Dustjacket taped to boards with small piece of scotch tape at front and back Text pages and page edges have very llight age-tanning. Beyond this the text isnear flawless with no marks or stamps. On January 19, 1861, Georgia left the Union and shortly afterward joined the Confederacy. Almost immediately, the Georgia coastline was blockaded by the Union navy. Joseph T. Derry, author of this concise military history of Confederate Georgia, was a well-known history text writer. With professionalism and feeling he chronicles Georgia's wartime struggles - within the State to defend her coastline, and outside the State to participate in such bloody operations as the first and second Battles of Manassas, Harper's Ferry, Shiloh, Fredricksburg and Vicksburg. His descriptions of the vigors and horrors of the War experienced by Georgian troops prior to 1864 pale in comparison to the way he presents the terrible fate of the State, herself, when General Sherman launched his brutal and highly successful Georgia campaign. Derry details this march to the sea and tells how Sherman's troops left in their wake the ruins of factories, cotton gins, warehouses, bridges, railroads, and public buildings. Special attention is paid to the destruction of Atlanta. Under Sherman's orders the city was thoroughly destroyed and fire was purposely set to buildings and permitted to spread until the defenseless city was reduced to ashes. The author ends this comprehensive history with the description of Georgia's last battle in the Civil War, when the Union forces destroyed the small fort at West Point on April 16, 1865, one week after Lee's surrender. He also recounts the circumstances of the Union arrest of President Davis, his family, members of the Confederate Cabinet together with their servants, all made prisoners in Georgia on May 5, 1865. There are four pages illustrated with 10 to 12 photographs of the generals on each pageplus page three has a full page photo of the author. A book from the Jack McK. Pardee Collection. Mr. Pardee was a collector of Americana who focused on frontier and natural history, hunting, wildlife, and firearms and is noted not only for his book selections but for his careful handling and storage. Most of his collection had faultless interior pages. E-mail for more information regarding the Pardee collection.
