Book
Hardcover. Condition: Good. The novel was first published in between November & December in 1928 in the German newspaper 'Vossische Zeitung', and in book form in late January 1929. The book and its sequel, 'The Road Back' published in 1930, were among the books banned and burned in Nazi Germany. / The book describes the German soldiers' extreme physical and mental trauma during the world war 1, and the detachment from civilian life felt by many upon returning home from the front. The book centers on Paul Bäumer, a German soldier on the Western Front during World War I. At the start of the book, Paul lives with his parents and sister in a charming German village. He attends school, where the patriotic speeches of his teacher Kantorek leads the whole class to volunteer for the Imperial German Army shortly after the start of The Great War. Bäumer arrives at the Western Front with his friends and schoolmates (Leer, Müller, Kropp, Kemmerich and a number of other characters). There, they meet Stanislaus Katczinsky, an older soldier nicknamed Kat, who becomes Paul's mentor. // This is a 20th impression hardback with its dustjacket in good condition-the text is a little 'foxed' & the dustjacket is creased & chipped. (319 pages).
