Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. This Lothrop, Lee & Shepard book was copyrighted in August 1909 and is in VG- condition. It is 8" x 5-1/4" with 341 numbered pages; if it was issued with a jacket, there is no jacket now. It has blue-green ribbed cloth with all gold lettering except publisher name on the spine is in red; 5-1/4" x 4" coated paper applique in middle of front cover, in muted colors, shows standing man raising cup of coffee, in a circle of at least 10 seated boys, a wooden cabin behind them; both front cover & spine have 4 vertical & 4 horizontal red lines. The front panel and spine has moderate general wear; both lower corners have wear and the boards are showing on both; bottom edges have very slight wear. There are no corner bumps or edge ding, but spine ends have been bumped without tears or fraying. Lettering on spine is worn but still visible. Except for a neatly stamped name on the front paste down, the interior is very clean and completely free of writing, stray marks, stains and page damage. There is a page listing a frontis + 5 other illustration, all on coated paper and all are present and firmly attached. The paper is slightly toned and is quite flexible; end pages have some slight toning. Hinges are strong and not damaged in any way. However, the last several pages are a bit loose but holding; and the front end pages have a 1" and a 1/2" paper tears over the front hinge--it is still quite strong. The plot is simple and unadorned--the two groups of very different-background boys spend a month on the island where the two men had enjoyed their childhood summers, with initial tensions between the poorer boys and the rather snobbish rich kids diminishing as they have a month of adventures together.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. This G+, format #1 book is in respectable condition; it is square and very clean and lists only to itself. The exterior has no edge dings but does have minor corner bumps to both lower corners and mildly bumped head and heel of the spine, all without fabric damage. The spine is mildly faded (see photo) but the front panel appliqué is intact and the gold lettering on both the spine and front panel is undamaged. Other than an inked name on the FFEP, the interior is completely free of writing, stray marks, stains of any sort and page damage. Hinges are strong, frontis + 5 is intact, and paper is quite flexible. Pages 109-112 are loose and laid in the book--they appear never to have been sewn into the book. The paper covering the rear hinge is torn the entire length (see photo), exposing the cheese cloth beneath but the hinge remains reasonably strong.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. This Lothrop, Lee & Shepard book was copyrighted in August, 1911 and is in VG+ condition. It is 8" x 5-1/2" with 344 numbered pages, followed by 10 unnumbered ages of ads; if it was issued with a jacket, there is no jacket now. It has brown ribbed cloth with gold lettering for title on front & spine, with all other lettering in black; a pictorial front, in tan & black, shows a large & well- equipped gymnasium with about a half-dozen types of apparatus, with a 4-3/8" x 2-1/4" coated paper applique in the middle of front cover, in shades of brown, showing the letters OSBC (Oak Street Boys Club) & DBC (Dunstanburg Boys Club) flanking a stack of books, one boy on hands knees straddling the books, a second boy behind him, leaning forward with hands on first boy's shoulders and a third boy standing up behind second boy with hands on the second boy's shoulders, all three boys wearing gym-type clothes; spine has round ball with stitching, in black & tan; plain white end pages; frontis + 5, all on coated paper; page listing all illustrations. It is square and very clean; it is free of corner bumps, has two very shallow edge dings on the top of the rear board, very slight wear on the bottom edges, and spine ends that are lightly bumped with no tears or fraying of the fabric. There is slight wear on the applique, but no where else. The interior is very clean and completely free of writing, stray marks, stains and page damage. There is a page listing a frontis + 5 other illustration, all on coated paper and all are present and firmly attached. The paper is slightly toned and is quite flexible; end pages have some slight toning. Hinges are strong and not damaged in any way. The plot is simple and unadorned--the two groups of very different-background boys are in the democratically run Oak Street Boys Club. A spoiled rich kid, Willis Sumner, gets his banker father to fund a rival club that he, Willis, can run. It is a much better facility; and Oak Street Club burns down, but in the end, the good kids win out over the spoiled rich kids. It is a good read.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. This VG-, format #2 book (black rather than gold lettering, a darker shade of red binding than format #1) is in very nice condition; it is square and very clean; it lists only to the 1913 title in the "U. S. Service" series by Rolt-Wheeler and therefore may be a first edition. The exterior has no edge dings but does have minor corner bumps to both corners of the front board and mildly bumped head and heel of the spine; there is mild fabric damage at the head of the spine (see photo). The front panel appliqué has a few mild scrapes but is intact. The interior is completely free of writing, stray marks, stains of any sort and page damage. Frontis + 5 is intact, the paper is quite flexible, and though the paper covering each hinge is torn for about 3 or 4 inches, both hinges are strong and do not seem compromised by that damage. By and large, a quite respectable copy from what seems to be an uncommon series.

It is 8" x 5-1/4" with 381 numbered pages followed by 6 unnumbered pages of ads. There is a page listing a frontis + 5, all of which are present and firmly attached. The book is square, "Brand New" clean, and free of edge dings and corner bumps, though the lower corners have a slight amount of wear, as do the bottom edges; spine ends are lightly bumped without fabric tears or fraying. The front panel illustration has virtually no wear (see photo) with only a very tiny chip on the bottom edge of the front panel and a very mild discoloration on a small portion of the rear panel. The interior is very clean and completely free of writing, stray marks, stains and page damage. There is a page listing a frontis + 6 other illustration, all on coated paper. The paper is slightly toned and is quite flexible; end pages have some slight toning. The VG- jacket has chips at the four corners, wear along both folds, two big chips on the rear panel, a smaller one on the bottom of the front panel that takes out part of the author's last name, several small chips at the head of the spine that do not affect any of the lettering, a faded spine, and several pieces of tape. Please see the photos--the jacket is not as bad looking as this description would suggest.
