First Edition
8vo. pp. 8 p.l., [9]-389. with errata slip. 2 portraits (incl. frontis.) & 2 folding maps. index. original cloth (extremities trifle frayed, inner front hinge tender). First Edition. The selection of personal correspondence of Thomas Ridout [1754-1829], public official in the Commissary Department and the Surveyor-General's Office, Surveyor-General of Upper Canada from 1810 to 1829, and member of the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council, provides an intimate portrait of the comfortable life of the official class in the early days of Upper Canada, as well as an historical account of the War of 1812. Edgar served on the board appointed to deal with claims for compensation for losses sustained during the War. The appendix includes Ridout's narrative of his captivity among the Shawanese, by whom he was released at Detroit in 1788, and a vocabulary, which he compiled, of the Shawanese language. TPL 1045. Watters p. 674.
