Book Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Inscribed "for Earl Danielson" and signed by Ed Reid in blue ink diagonally to the blank FFE. "Third Printing" stated. NO jacket. Journalist Ed Reid's (1915-1977) eight-part series for the Brooklyn Eagle beginning in 1949 exposed the activities of bookmaker Harry Gross and corrupt members of the New York City Police Department. That exposé led to an investigation by Brooklyn District Attorney Miles McDonald, resulting in the eventual resignation of New York Mayor William O'Dwyer -- and in Reid being awarded the 1951 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. Reid then went to work for the Las Vegas Sun, where his investigative reporting exposed the hidden ownership interest of mobsters Jake and Meyer Lansky in the Thunderbird Hotel. Reid then co-authored with Ovid Demaris "The Green Felt Jungle," New York Times Best Seller for 23 weeks in 1964, exposing greed and depravity in Las Vegas. The book connected then-Sen. Barry Goldwater to labor racketeer Willy Bioff, and Goldwater threatened a libel suit against the publisher. We wish we could report Left-wing Sun publisher Hank Greenspun gave Reid a promotion and a raise after publication of "Green Felt Jungle." In fact, Greenspun fired him. (Defending Soviet agents in the State Department against exposure -- now shown to be completely accurate -- by Sen. Joe McCarthy? Count him in! Standing behind an honest and courageous enterprise reporter who exposed Mob ownership and control of Las Vegas casinos? Um . . . not so much. Gotta protect those advertising revenues.) Reid went on to write "The Grim Reapers: The Anatomy of Organized Crime in America (Bantam, 1970); "The Mistress and the Mafia (The Virginia Hill Story)" (Bantam, 1972), and "Mickey Cohen: Mobster" (Pinnacle Books, 1973.) Co-author Ovid Demaris (born Ovide Desmarais in Biddeford, Maine, 1919-1998) was a former United Press correspondent who went on to write books about Lucky Luciano, Jack Ruby, Judith Campbell Exner (with Judith Campbell Exner!), Jimmy Fratianno, and J. Edgar Hoover. 242 pp. including appendix of licensed casino owners, 1963. Reduced from $150. Signed by Author(s).
