Conan Doyle had finished his Holmes saga and killed him off in, The Final Problem, published in 1893. A few years later, Conan Doyle found himself in need of further income, as he was planning to build a new home, called "Undershaw". He decided to take his character to the stage and wrote a play. After various communications in search of a producer who really believed in the script of the play, it was suggested Doyle build upon the theatrical version written by the actor, William Gillette. The two agreed and the result was the play, "Sherlock Holmes". Of course, its star, wa,s William Gillette, who in all reviews was adored in the role by Everyone! This book of Sherlock Holmes Detective Stories features the "Sherlock Holmes of the stage"-as Gillette came to be known, in three photographed scenes from the play, "Sherlock Holmes"! in Three photo scenes; frontispiece, plus two others lent to the editors of this book by the rights owners Byron of N.Y. 359 pp.securely bound. Brown cloth with three owls blindstamped. Frayed at the head of the spine.
