This is the story of the 'Ladye Doris', a Glasgow-built, steel-hulled, three-masted commercial sailing ship which plied the Cape of Horn route to the Pacific and Australia At the beginning of the last century. Many ships of thIs kind ran this route and some of the masters took their families with them for the months-long voyages. Mary Hay, daughter of Charles Wood, master of the 'Ladye Doris', was one such passenger who kept a journal, and she has translated it into a fascinating narrative spanning some six years when she was in her early teens. These were the years she witnessed all the hardships endured by men who went to sea under sail; storms, hurricanes, every kind of danger, and she shared them. Her unique travels culminated in the happiest of endings, marriage to one of the young men who served her father and who himself later became a sea captain. Lavishly illustrated with photographs from the author's family collection mostly published here for the first time. Ref W 5.
