1st UK Edition thus, 8vo (22cm), (6), ii, xvi, 212pp. Original bevelled green cloth. Titling in curious oriental font to front board. Ornamental frame in blind to rear cover. Titles and thistle in gilt to spine. Minor wear to edges and corners. Binding tight. Original yellow enpapers intact. No inscriptions or other ownership marks. An excellent copy of this first printing of the UK edition. Many reprints and facsimiles appeared, without the publisher's imprint on the spine. Donald MacLeod first published his letters to the Edinburgh Weekly Chronicle as a pamphlet, in Edinburgh in 1841. A second edition was published in Greenock in 1856, and a third "enlarged and improved" edition was published in Toronto, Canada in 1857 where Macleod had by then settled. This Canadian edition was the basis for all subsequent editions and the first to bear the 'gloomy' title. After her tour through Europe, Mrs. Harriet Beecher Stowe (author of Uncle Tom's Cabin) had published her letters in 1854 under the title "Sunny Memories", in which she writes about the Duke and Dutchess of Sutherland and their Scottish estate (Letter XVII). Macleod, in protest to this and in stark contrast, gave the title 'Gloomy Memories' to the Canadian edition of his collected letters and writings.
