Beowulf is the longest poem in Old English. This edition comes from the Nowell Codex which dates from the late 10th or early 11th centuries. The poem itself very likely dates to the seventh century and reflects political conditions in south Sweden, the Danish islands, and Jutland in the middle to late sixth century. Hrothgar, King of the Danes, has recently built a new mead hall to entertain his warriors, and the king has named it Heorot. Interestingly, archaeological remains of a hall dating to the time of Hrothgar have been discovered at Lejre on the island of Zealand. Judith recounts the slaying of the Assyrian Holophernes by the Israelite Judith. The inclusion of Judith with Beowulf might have been purposeful, the idea being to compare the Israelite heroine with the Scandinavian epic hero and Holophernes to the monster Grendel. Volume IV of the Anglo-Saxon Poetic Records Size: 9 X 5.8 X 1". book.
