Book
Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. Colour Photographs (illustrator). First Edition. SUBTITLED : ` The Penan of the Borneo Rain Forest ', A 144 page ethno-geographic study of a nomadic people of Sarawak. The book has three somewhat distinct sections. The FIRST (major) one looks at the traditional, gentle lifestyle of the Penan speaking people as hunter-gatherers. Their principal food comes from the sago palm. We also see bits of their mythology, medical technology, and family structure. Their most important discovery is tajem - the poison for their blowpipe darts. The SECOND section looks at the local logging companies' regime of deforestation in the search for tropical hardwoods. The THIRD section deals with protest and appeal. Outstanding colour photographs assist text. One map - page 12. LEARN more about : Long Ajeng, pygmy squirrels, Rafflesia, ecosystems, Sahabat Alam, rhizomes, Ibau Jiki, parang, Ungap, Batu Bungan, babui, tahat, Unyang Wan, and bekela. Cond : Paper wrapper is black with white lettering. Front and back cover both have large colour photographs. The former is of a river winding through dense jungle (blowpipe inset), the latter is of a family feast laid-out in a jungle home. French flaps - not price clipped. Spine fine, colours bright, binding tight. No edge or corner wear. Neither names, marks, creases, folds, bumps, nor tears. Decidedly giftable !! Quote (p. 20) : " It is just after dawn and the sound of gibbons runs across the canopy of the forest. In the valley far below the smoke of cooking fires mingles with the mist. A hunting party returns, and even from this height one can tell by the movement of the men that they have killed a wild boar. One shot and ._._._. ." Size: 8vo.
