A FINE copy of the extremely rare and highly collectible First Edition of 1982. This copy with 10 contemporary pages from Advertising Age Magazine, November 1982 and June 1983, loosely inserted and including the illustrated main article: "He was never a slave to the rules. The Bernbach touch: Wit, good writing, good art." an interview by Bart Cummings. Bernbach had died on 2 October 1982. Hardback in matt grey boards with the "Lemon" ad. (also on wrapper cover) in a blind-impression on the upper board, clean, square and tight. Unpaginated pages, illustrated throughout with the Volkswagen ads in colour and black & white as appropriate. As-new throughout with no inscription."The advertisements they produced through the sixties and early seventies changed the face of advertising. Not just in America but across the world." The book looks briefly at the events surrounding the birth of the ad campaign and reproduces many of the highly acclaimed ads that were produced. Bernbach's acclaimed work is confirmed by the appearance of the cover ad 'Lemon' in Episode 3 of the first series of the TV show "Mad Men" which also sees Don Draper and Co discussing the campaign's merits. Office boys read them aloud by the water cooler. College kids recited them at campus parties. They were the marketing conversation piece of the sixties. To let the Beetle and its advertising pass on without a permanent record seemed a crying shame. No car was ever more loved and no advertising more admired. In a way the two became indivisible. The charming honest advertising became part of the charm and honesty of the car. The wrapper is almost Fine as there is a scratch to the rear and light shelf wear with a hint of toning to the lighter edges. Note: the toning to the front cover illustration is from the reproduced publication carrying the famous "Lemon" ad. and not the wrapper. A mint copy with the magazine articles inserted, a true iconic work in its original state. 20% price reduction applied.
