Pamphlet. 18, [1] p.; 18 cm. (Heritage biographies) `.it is argued that Penry's other writings are in serious vein, and that to save him life he denied that he was Martin. But the Marprelate adventure was, after all, a joint undertaking and not any one man's sole responsibility; and there was a gay as well as a solemn side to the nature of the young Welshman [John Penry = ap Henry = Harrison] who in Sharpe's hearing defended the use of jesting banter and who, when Sharpe suggested that he was the author of the Epitome, laughed in a way that confirmed the suspicion, the reckless masquerader who, so a servant of Sir Richard Knightley said, `went disguised', gaily hatted and sworded, in a long sky-coloured or light-coloured cloak, its collar edged with gold and silver and silk lace. Sharpe heard Penry say that in the first Martin, the Epistle, use had been made of notes found in Field's study. Perhaps, after all, Penry, a born writer, if there ever was one, and one whose output during the half-dozen years of authorship allowed to him was, when you consider the difficulties and dangers of his life, truly impressive, is entitled more than anyone else to the credit of launching the vogue of Elizabethan satire with works in which abounding vitality and verve are directed with consecrated rashness to the advancement of a great cause. That hangman's rope has robbed the world of literary works of genius and passion.' (p. 11 f.) VG, stapled, in orig. magenta on gray wrapper.
